What Is CNC Machining?
CNC (computer numerical control) is a process where computers control machine tools to create parts and products with high precision.
In CNC machining, a computer program tells the machine exactly how to move and what to do. This ensures that each part is made exactly the same, with incredible accuracy. It’s like having a skilled craftsman but with the speed and precision of modern technology. CNC machining is perfect for producing everything from car parts to intricate components for electronics and medical devices.

American Tool & Die provides 3-axis machining with added 4-axis indexing with work envelopes up to 31” x 60” x 24”. We can accommodate larger sizes with additional setups. We handle bar feed turning from .125” – 1.25” and larger parts with ODs up to 20”, as well as hard turning. See our equipment list for more details.
The Materials We Use
CNC machining can work with a variety of materials, making it a versatile option for many different projects. Here are some of the common materials we use:
- Metals: CNC machining is great for working with metals like aluminum and tool steels. These metals are strong and durable, making them ideal for parts that must withstand a lot of wear and tear.
- Plastics: We also machine various types of plastics, which are often used when a lightweight and cost-effective material is needed. They are perfect for parts that don’t need to bear heavy loads but still require precision and durability.
- Composites: Composites are materials made from two or more different substances combined to create something with unique properties. These materials can be incredibly strong and lightweight, making them useful for specialized applications where traditional materials might not be suitable.
Because we machine a wide range of materials, we can create parts and products that meet the specific needs of your project.
A World of Applications
Our CNC machining services are aerospace-compliant and ideal for a broad array of industries, thanks to our precision and versatility. Here are just a few of the applications where CNC machining has a significant impact:
- Aerospace
- Automotive
- Consumer Products
- Electronics
- Industrial Machinery
- Medical Devices

How Do You Ensure Quality Control in CNC Machining?
Quality control in CNC machining involves several steps. First, the machine is calibrated and maintained to ensure it operates correctly. Next, the parts are inspected during and after production using various measurement tools and techniques. This ensures that each part meets the required specifications.
How Does CNC Machining Handle Complex Geometries?
CNC machines can handle complex geometries by using multi-axis machining. Standard CNC machines typically have three axes (X, Y, and Z), and we use added 4-axis indexing to approach the part from multiple angles, making it possible to create complex shapes.
